| Romance Writers of New Zealand is an excellent organisation for aspiring and published writers. RWNZ produces a monthly newsletter full of news, interviews, tips and accounts of success and inspiration. The annual RWNZ conference attracts international keynote speakers and editors and agents from some of the world's most prestigious publishing houses and literary agencies. Writing Romantic Fiction by multi-published New Zealand writers, Daphne Clair and Robyn Donald is a handbook I dip into all the time. Writing a Romance Novel for Dummies (Wiley Publishing Inc) is written by Leslie Wainger, a long-time editor of fiction in every major genre. This is a great step-by-step guide by someone with years of in-depth experience in the field of women's fiction and romance writing. Writing a Romance Novel for Dummies is another resource that's always on my desk. The Wild Rose Press publishes a fabulous range of romance in print and electronic format. They offered me my first contract for a full-length manuscript so they'll always hold a special place in my heart. I've been especially impressed with the swift, professional and helpful responses from the Wild Rose editorial and administrative team. Harlequin and Harlequin Mills and Boon are usually the first publishers who come to mind when thinking about romance writing. It's well worth exploring the Harlequin website for writing tips and guidelines, as well as gaining an insight into the extensive selection of lines and titles that are being published. Building an online presence is important for new writers but it can be bewildering and very time-consuming. Kristen Lamb, author of We Are Not Alone - The Writer's Guide to Social Media, has some useful advice for building social networking into your daily schedule. |
